Will grapes grow here? The Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains are top viticulture (vine growing) areas.
What types of grapes will grow here? All table and wine grapes will grow in the region. Specific areas may not ripen certain grapes, so matching site to vine is very important.
How do I decide what to grow? Vine type and rootstock must be matched up to climate and soil to produce good grapes. Market conditions, grower and winemaker preference should also be key factors.
Can I do this on my own? Most farm agents around the country will recommend that farmers not try and grow grapes without engaging a specialist. Homeowners with out agricultural experience will have even more challenges. You really should not attempt to grow grape vines without help.
How many vines should I plant? Vine density is a function of climate, soil, training methods and desired yields. 500-2000 per acre is typical in California
How much wine does that make? On average one acre produces 3 tons of grapes or about 2500 bottles.
Do they need a trellis and wires? Vines can be trained without trellis and wire. The site, variety, and goals of the owner should help determine if a trellis system is needed.
How much water will they need? A vine typically needs 1 gallon per week during the growing season. It can get this from reserves in the soil under the right conditions.
Can I do some of the work? Yes, nothing is hard to do, but you should be trained first.
How long until I get wine? Five to seven years. Vines should not be allowed to set fruit in their first 2 years. You will have a small amount of fruit in year three. Winemaking takes an additional 2 years.
Who else does this work? There are several companies in the area. Devine Consulting is the largest. Several area wineries also offer the service including Cinnabar (Ron Mosley), Clos LaChance, Cronin and Woodside.
